Hot on the heels of our deep dive into the Atlassian Service Collection, it’s time to take a look at a fellow new arrival: The Atlassian Software Collection.
Available on the Atlassian Cloud Platform, the Software Collection has been designed to provide software development and engineer teams with a cohesive blend of apps and tools to streamline, automate and enhance their work.
But does the Atlassian Software Collection deliver? What’s included? And is it the solution you and your teams have been looking for?
We’ll cover all of this in today’s article.
What is the Atlassian Software Collection?
The Atlassian Software Collection is, as the name suggests, a selection of Atlassian apps, AI-experiences and Rovo Agents, designed for Software Development Teams.
Launched at Atlassian Team ’25 Europe, the Software Collection has been created to enhance productivity, developer satisfaction and quality of work. Atlassian has also focused on speed with this collection – connecting tightly integrated tools and AI capabilities to support even the most complex Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC), and produce superior output, fast.

What is Rovo Dev?
Rovo Dev is the first of its kind from Atlassian – a standalone Rovo solution comprising AI-powered experiences and capabilities. It is available in your terminal, IDE and Jira (coming soon), and has been designed to automate and optimise core elements of your code planning, generation and review.
From analysing code and suggesting enhancements, to reviewing code reviews and applying basic fixes in GitHub, Rovo Dev is essentially a highly powerful, AI software development assistant.
Crucially, you can also tailor your instructions and prompts for Rovo Dev, ensuring that it aligns with your team’s unique patterns, objectives and standards.
As Atlassian describes it: ‘Rovo Dev works across Jira, VS Code, the CLI, Bitbucket and Github to streamline the SDLC.’ By automating and enhancing an array of actions and repetitive tasks, Rovo Dev can enable software developers to maintain a flow state – ultimately leading to faster, more impactful work.
Note! You can purchase it separately (starting at $20 per developer/month on a standard plan), or it is, of course, included in the Software Collection.
What is DX and its role in the Atlassian Software Collection?
DX is a Developer Intelligence solution, and was recently acquired by Atlassian. Now, it joins a range of other apps as part of the Software Collection.
DX enables leaders to understand productivity levels and more, throughout the SDLC. Metrics include:
- AI adoption and impact measurement
- Developer experience visibility
- Developer productivity and system health insights
From understanding the value of AI tooling, to securing stronger ROI metrics, DX provides you with both quantitative and qualitative data, designed to support performance benchmarking, reporting and identifying potential improvements.

What is Pipelines?
Bitbucket pipelines, to be precise, which is Atlassian’s solution for structured, yet dynamic pipelines.
As part of the Software Collection, development and engineering teams can use Pipelines to build and automate scalable, CI/CD pipelines.
From monitoring pipeline progress, to creating powerful workflows, Pipelines is included in your Bitbucket subscription. And, as we know, the entire Bitbucket offering is now included in the Atlassian Software Collection!
So, let’s more on to Bitbucket next.
What is Bitbucket, and where does it fit in the Atlassian Software Collection?
Whereas Rovo Dev is an entirely new solution, and DX is a new arrival to the Atlassian Cloud Platform, many of you will already be familiar with Bitbucket.
Launched by Atlassian in 2008, Bitbucket is a popular source code repository, with 15 million developers using it. It enables collaborative source code management, strengthened with AI, CI/CD and a powerful Jira integration.
You can read more about this app in our recent comparison of Bitbucket vs GitHub.
Whilst Bitbucket is included in the Software Collection, it also currently still available to buy separately, with free, standard and premium tiers.
What is Compass?
Compass enables a complete software catalogue, designed to make it faster and easier for developers to find what they need.
From APIs and documentation, to on-call schedules and more, Compass is your centralised, unified source of software development knowledge. What’s more, you can document and track all dependencies, view key activities, and instantly understand the status of your system health.
Similar to Bitbucket, Atlassian’s Compass app is included in the Software Collection, but can also be purchased separately.
Ensure your Atlassian environment stays efficient and compliant. With our Atlassian Tooling Health Check, we help you identify hidden risks, optimise performance, and transform your tooling into a secure, scalable, AI-ready foundation.
Do your development and engineering teams need the Atlassian Software Collection?
The chances are that your software development teams already have a range of similar apps and tooling in use – if not the same (if your work is centred on an Atlassian tech-stack, it’s likely you’re already using Bitbucket and Compass, for example).
The value in the Software Collection is not, therefore, necessarily the range of tools (although the newly acquired DX is a compelling addition). Instead, it’s the concept of having a collection of deeply integrated, cohesive tools – all ready to use for a holistic, 360-degree experience.
Access to Rovo Dev is another bonus, as this is an exclusive new tool. We’ll watch with interest to see how its AI capabilities continue to evolve and enhance development work.
Crucially, the Atlassian Software Collection also enables integration with wider third-party tools – so if your teams are using GitHub rather than Bitbucket (for example), you can stilll benefit from a tighltly connected development ecosystem.
Let’s just sum up those benefits quickly:
3 reasons to invest in the new Software Collection from Atlassian
- It is a ready-made, curated collection of apps to automate and enhance software development speed, quality and productivity.
- The Software Collection can integrate with third-party tools, like GitHub, for example.
- It includes Rovo Dev, an exciting new standalone Rovo offering – using AI-powered automations to help developers and software engineers maintain flow.
Something for the Software Development teams
From our perspective, it is exciting to see Atlassian bring something new to the software developer community.
Whilst Jira started off solely as the preserve of development teams, in recent years the app has evolved to be a project management and work tracking tool for all teams. Now, this is no bad thing; it’s good sense for all teams to have access to powerful project management capabilities, and we know first hand that centralising tooling across wider business areas can enhance both consistency and productivity.
However, it’s been a while since we have seen Atlassian really focus in on that original core user base of software developers and engineers.
Now, following in the footsteps of the Teamwork Collection (keeping work moving across all teams), the Strategy Collection (enhancing enterprise Agility and transformation), and the Service Collection (combining dynamic ITSM and CSM tooling), we have the long-awaited Software Collection. It’s exciting to see Atlassian return to this audience, and we’re looking forward to witnessing how this offering evolves.
