Today we’re taking a deep dive into Atlassian’s Loom, a video-messaging and communication app.
Loom has really risen to prominence in the Atlassian ecosystem this year, in part due to its inclusion in the Teamwork Collection, which was announced at Atlassian’s flagship event, Team ’25 Anaheim, earlier this year.
So, let’s take a look at Loom’s role throughout the System of Work, core benefits and use cases, and explore how your teams can use it.
What is Atlassian Loom?
Atlassian Loom is a video messaging and communication platform, and a core app on the Atlassian Cloud Platform. It can be used by teams to record short video messages or screen-shares in place of meetings, and can provide recaps and minutes when meetings do take place.
Loom began life in 2016, launched as an antidote to clunky video tools that weren’t purpose built for business teams. At the point at which Atlassian acquired the platform, Loom had amassed over 200k customers, who had collectively recorded approximately 1.5billion minutes of footage.
Since then Loom has further evolved to include AI capabilities. These range from removing filler words in a voiceover (such as ‘umm’ – which surely we’re all guilty of?), to automatically turning your video content into a document, or creating a ‘work item’ (formerly known as an issue) in Jira.
How are teams using Loom (and how will yours?)
In line with Atlassian’s vision of connecting all teams, Loom fulfils multiple use cases for different business areas.
Software development
Let’s say you’re in software development. With Loom, you can quickly record your screen, whilst drawing or annotating at the same time, for a dynamic presentation. If you create a Loom recording of a bug that needs fixing, the app can automatically create a fully populated work item, saving you time and effort. And for a truly cohesive approach, Loom integrates with software development tools like Github.
Service management
If you’re in IT service management, meanwhile, you could record a Loom video to answer customer or employee queries. With branding options like your company logo, you can create professional video content with a human touch – and you can share across multiple platforms, including email, instant messaging, browser or even social media. Loom analytics will help you understand when and how customers engage with your videos.
Business teams
We see teams in all business areas using Loom to share updates quickly and securely in real-time – which colleagues can then view and respond to at a time that suits them. So, rather than disrupting the flow of work for a meeting, during which only on or two teammates might provide updates, but where everyone attends, we see organisations instead using Loom to provide those valuable updates, but in a much more efficient and succinct way.
⏰ Did you know?
In an Atlassian trial, teams replaced meetings with Loom videos. As a result, they freed up 5,000 hours which otherwise would have been spent in meetings, and which now could be dedicated to focused work.
These results are quite something. If you also want achieve significant time savings across your teams, we can support you.
Change doesn’t happen through a shift in technology alone; it also requires widespread team engagement and adoption, strong underlying processes and a solid understanding of best practice. These are all things we can help you with here at AC – from embedding new tools, like Loom, to enhancing stakeholder engagement.

How does Loom fit into the Atlassian System of Work?
Loom is closely aligned with the Atlassian System of Work philosophy, as it has the power to connect teams across the globe, regardless of location or timezone .
The idea is that by creating a purposeful System of Work, through carefully selected apps and integrations, teams can dismantle silos and improve the flow, efficiency and quality of their output.
Apps like Jira, designed to provide project management tooling for both its traditional user base (software developers) and wider business teams, or Confluence, which facilitates organisation-wide collaboration and knowledge management, clearly both support the System of Work approach. With its asynchronous video communication, AI capabilities, and deep integration with Atlassian apps, Loom does too.
The Atlassian Teamwork Collection
Alongside Jira and Confluence, Loom is part of the Atlassian Teamwork Collection – a range of Atlassian apps and Rovo agents, carefully combined to help teams move faster and more securely, in one cohesive techstack.
What are the benefits of Loom?
Teams that embed Loom into their daily communications can benefit from:
Big time savings: Replacing meetings and calls with updates recorded and shared via Loom.
Increased efficiency: Teammates can quickly view and feed back on Loom recordings in line with their own schedule, rather than disrupting the flow of work with meetings.
Reduced manual tasks: Loom AI provides automated actions such as transforming a Loom recording into a document, or populating a work item in Jira.
Enhanced connection across timezones and regions: Overcome time differences and geography by exchanging asynchronous video recordings.
Improved meeting transcripts and action points: When you do still need a meeting, Loom can record transcripts, take minutes and record actions.
Strong UX: Our team recommend Loom as slick and user-friendly, when both making and editing a recording with screencap and facecam.
A tightly integrated video application: Loom is embedded in the Atlassian Cloud Platform, rather than another separate tool.
How can you get started with Loom?
As we already mentioned, Loom is part of the Teamwork Collection – so if you’re keen to explore the value of Jira, Confluence and Loom together, alongside dedicated Rovo Agents, we can help you understand your options and use cases.
You can also purchase Loom separately, with plans starting off as free. Atlassian has provided a full Loom pricing breakdown here.
As always, our advice would be that a tool is just one part of the puzzle. If meetings are draining your teams’ time, or collaboration is fragmented, it may point to deeper cultural challenges across your organisation.
