The AWS migration process is complex for a system of any size, because to the large number of components and dependencies between them. That is why many companies opt to work with a certified AWS migration partner, to ensure a smooth transition.

Organisations can choose to take one of many different migration strategies, but we can help you work out which one is best for your specific needs.

AWS offers a number of tools and services to help organisations with discovery and migration tracking (e.g. AWS Migration Hub), server and database migration, and petabyte-scale data migration (e.g. AWS Snowball). We can also provide advice on the best tools available on the AWS Marketplace to support your AWS cloud migration.

Our migration process

At Automation Consultants, we operate a tried and tested five-step process for clients undertaking an AWS migration.

Step 1 – Mapping out dependencies

The first step is to map out dependencies in your existing data centre environment and figure out how these can best be replicated in the Amazon cloud without incurring downtime.  

This may involve migrating your applications to an AWS environment as well. But if we can’t move your apps, we’ll put new connectivity paths in place and ensure they’re tested prior to the migration.

Step 2 – Running a trial migration

Next, we’ll conduct a trial migration. This is crucial to identify any potential problems and mitigate the risks of unplanned downtime. In order to do this, we take a copy of the target system, set it up in the target environment, and test it while the original application (production version) stays in place. Additionally, we can get your users to test it (also known as user acceptance testing).

Step 3 – Conducting the live migration

The live migration needs to be done out-of-hours, as it will involve taking the system down. Any changes that need to be made manually will happen before the migration, as there normally isn’t time to do them during system downtime. The system will then be taken down and the live migration performed. Then, smoke tests and sanity checks (rapid tests that can be done in the time available) will be done before the migrated system is made live. If the smoke tests fail, the system is rolled back, i.e. reverted to its state before the attempted live migration.

Step 4 – Early life support

Once the migration has been successfully completed, our team will be on standby to help fix any errors for the first few weeks.

Step 5 – Ongoing support

Longer term, we can support the migrated system for an indefinite period after the migration is complete, to help you optimise your AWS setup and ensure maximum uptime and performance. Prevention of errors is often more cost effective than fixing them.
