Challenge
A global logistics company were managing a large and dispersed Atlassian ecosystem. Teams worked across multiple instances of Jira and Confluence, which meant collaboration required numerous logins. Some instances were hosted in the Cloud, whilst others were On-premise.
User Management also provided a challenge as users were stored in the application’s internal directory instead of integrating with the company’s Active Directory. User accounts in the application were in a variety of formats and needed to be corrected before they could be mapped to their Active Directory account.
Solution
Automation Consultants formulated a plan to migrate and consolidate their largest Jira and Confluence instances onto Data Center platforms. This started with the migration of their On-premise Jira and Confluence to the new Data Center instances hosted in Azure. Once successful, AC proceeded to migrate the Cloud Jira and Confluence sites to the new platform. The migration of the Cloud site was particularly complex due to the large amount of configuration that was being merged.
To address User Management, AC created a bespoke plugin for Jira and Confluence that reviewed all user accounts on the system against an export of the customer’s Active Directory. The plugin performed a series of comparison algorithms to identify matching user accounts and highlighted any unsuccessful matches or duplicates. On approval, the plugin updated the user accounts stored in the application to match their counterparts in the Active Directory.
Benefits
AC was able to migrate and consolidate the customer’s primary Jira and Confluence instances to a platform that was resilient and high performing. Through the use of the bespoke plugin, AC was able to transform and map their users so that the applications could be integrated with Azure AD, allowing for simpler user governance. AC was also able to assist the customer in identifying inactive and duplicate users, which helped reduce overall license usage.
